Hi, I’m Charles Jazz Terrier, an actor, writer and filmmaker from Melbourne. I grew up between Melbourne, Paris, Sydney and Los Angeles, which makes me technically well travelled but still emotionally dependent on Melbourne coffee.
I’m happiest when I’m making something. Usually it’s a film. Sometimes it’s a song I’ll play for almost no one, a painting, or a stand-up set I agreed to while feeling unusually brave. I love comedy, great stories, strange ideas, and projects that don’t quite work yet but might become something brilliant if you stay with them long enough.
When I’m not making things, I’m usually travelling somewhere most people have never heard of. If you’ve ever looked at a place and wondered who would want to go there, well, me. I would. There’s a fair chance I’m already there, explaining myself with bad French, enthusiastic hand gestures and misplaced confidence. The less obvious the destination, the more interested I become.
A few other things worth knowing. I stop to pat every dog, help every bee I can, and move snails out of harm’s way, which has made punctuality more an aspiration than a guarantee. And I’m an unreasonably emotional North Melbourne supporter, though that may be less a sporting interest than an advanced course in resilience.
But more than anything, I love people: the ones I’ve worked with, the ones who’ve shaped me, and the ones I haven’t met yet. Acting, writing and filmmaking are really just different ways of trying to understand them. So if something here strikes a chord, don’t be a stranger.
